Aquael Pat Mini sponge filter review for shrimps

The perfect Shrimp filter from Aquael

My original filter

My shrimp tank started off with a standard air driven, sponge shrimp filter. One of those that use an airline and a noisy pump. A pretty simple, great filter for shrimp, that is very common. While this wasn’t extremely powerful, it was very, very noisy.

This air powered pump was very loud, and the trickle of the bubbles were very loud too. Thing is I wanted to keep the sponge filter as it’s extremely Shrimp safe and allows the Shrimp to pick off bits that are stuck to the exposed sponge. An alternative food source, so to speak.

My new Aquael shrimp filter

The more quiet filters, almost silent, are those that are submersed. Filters that are completely below the waters surface. These filter don’t really make any noise at all and can be very powerful.

So after searching the internet I found a great filter from Aquael.  Aquael Pat Mini sponge filter, that combines the two elements.

It’s a subversive filter that uses a sponge on the outside, rather than a grate. So shrimp cant get sucked in, yet still benefit from the sponge being exposed so they can feed off it.

The filter has a little toggle that can increase or decrease the water flow. It also has a little airline attachment so you could get that benefit of huge surface area as it bubbles away, but this doesn’t have to be added.

I’ve had this filter two months now and it’s fantastic. It does come with an EU (two pronged) plug, however mine came with a really good adaptor, not sure if that’s standard with the filter or the eBay seller included it. So watch out for that as I think it’s a Polish company.

However great filter, perfect for Shrimp.
