My little aquarium stand for my 30 Litre Dennerle Shrimp Tank was more of a small table. It was temporary.
So I eventually bought a 3 drawer unit from IKEA. The thing with IKEA products though, are that they aren’t the strongest. And fish tanks are heavy. Even this little tank weighs a hell of a lot when it’s full of water. It’s barely liftable.
Standard units like this one from IKEA aren’t meant for things such as fish tanks. The risk of the unit collapsing in the near future just isn’t worth taking. It’s never happened to myself, but a smashed fish tank, flooded floor, and dead, dried out fish has to be one of the worst disasters (within reason) you can come home to.
So I bought the unit, and reinforced it with some plywood. The unit doesn’t have a back support. So this piece of wood was screwed to the back of the unit, on the inside. This will iv’e the top piece something to sit on, and also stop the unit from skewing. It provides a massive amount of support.
Naturally I got my dad to come round and fix this up for me. I’m just the ideas/camera man.
The piece of wood has been screwed in down both sides. The screws have then been capped with BNQ white screw caps to hide the custom job.
Always make sure the unit is level before adding the tank, otherwise the glass can come apart.
If I was putting a larger aquarium on this, like a 2 foot, I would add further support. However for this 30 litre, it should be sufficient. The risk is now reduced.
